From the Darkroom to the Real World: My Journey in Photography

People often ask how I got started in photography, and the truth is that photography wasn't my original plan.

I attended the University of Florida to study art, focusing primarily on painting and drawing. As part of my coursework, I enrolled in a photography class simply to learn how to document my artwork. What I didn't expect was that the class would completely change the direction of my career.

From the moment I stepped into the darkroom, I was hooked. There was something magical about the process—watching an image slowly appear on a blank sheet of paper, learning how light shapes a photograph, and discovering new ways to tell stories through images. Photography combined everything I loved about art: composition, light, form, and creativity, while adding the excitement of capturing real moments.

Before long, I changed my major to Creative Photography and never looked back.

A Foundation in Photojournalism

After graduating, I began working as a photojournalist, an experience that shaped the way I see the world and approach photography today.

As a photojournalist, no two days were ever the same. I photographed sporting events, community features, breaking news, local events, and everyday life. I learned how to work quickly, adapt to changing conditions, and find compelling images in almost any situation.

Most importantly, I learned how to tell stories through photographs.

Whether I was covering a championship game, documenting a community event, or photographing someone in their daily environment, my goal was always to create images that felt authentic and meaningful.

That experience taught me to look beyond the obvious and capture the details that make a photograph memorable.

Why I Love Photography

What I love most about photography is its ability to preserve moments and reveal beauty that often goes unnoticed.

Photography encourages us to slow down and really see our surroundings. It allows us to capture emotion, personality, architecture, design, and the unique character of a place or person.

I still enjoy photographing people and telling their stories. There's something special about creating portraits that feel genuine and reflect who someone truly is.

At the same time, photography continues to challenge me creatively. Every subject presents a new opportunity to explore light, composition, and perspective.

Who I Serve

My background allows me to work comfortably across a variety of photographic disciplines.

I enjoy working with:

  • Families and individuals seeking authentic portraits

  • Weddings

  • Professionals who need polished headshots and branding images

  • Businesses looking for visual content

  • Real estate professionals

  • Architects, builders, and interior designers who want to showcase their work

Whether I'm photographing a person, a home, or a commercial space, my goal is always the same: to create images that are visually compelling, thoughtfully composed, and true to the subject.

What Makes My Approach Different

My approach to photography is deeply rooted in both fine art and photojournalism.

My training as an artist taught me to pay attention to the elements of design—line, shape, balance, texture, and space. My years as a photojournalist taught me how to observe, anticipate moments, and tell stories through images.

Recently, I've become especially interested in real estate and architectural photography. For me, photographing a space is much more than documenting a room. There is a creative art to staging, composition, and finding the perfect light.

I enjoy highlighting the architectural details that make a property unique while emphasizing the flow, lines, and spatial relationships that help viewers connect with a space. Every room has a personality, and my goal is to capture it in a way that feels inviting, natural, and visually engaging.

Whether I'm photographing people or places, I bring the same artistic eye and storytelling mindset to every project.

Looking Ahead

Photography has taken me from the darkroom at the University of Florida to newsrooms, sporting events, community stories, and now into the world of portrait, real estate, and architectural photography.

What has remained constant throughout that journey is my passion for creating images that connect with people.

Thank you for visiting my website and taking the time to learn a little about my story. I look forward to sharing more photography tips, projects, and behind-the-scenes experiences here on the blog—and hopefully working with you in the future.
